Vehicle driving performance analysis has traditionally relied on expensive professional data acquisition systems (DAS), which limits accessibility and practical use in educational and research environments. The purpose of this study is to quantitatively analyze vehicle driving performance using a low-cost smartphone-based measurement system and to evaluate its practical applicability through comparison with a commercial Data Acquisition System (DAS). To achieve this objective, a geometric driving trajectory analysis was first conducted to establish a feasible shortest-path model considering vehicle width and minimum turning radius. Based on this model, differences between theoretical driving trajectories and actual driving data were analyzed. Subsequently, a smartphone-based application (APP) measurement system and a commercial DAS were simultaneously operated under identical vehicle and driving conditions. Longitudinal acceleration, lateral acceleration, vehicle speed, and GPS-based driving trajectory data were collected from slalom, circuit, and public-road driving environments. The collected data were analyzed using quantitative evaluation metrics, including peak value comparison, Mean Error (ME), Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), relative error, and correlation coefficients. The results showed that the average relative error of longitudinal acceleration was approximately 1.0%, while that of lateral acceleration was approximately 0.8%. Both parameters exhibited correlation coefficients greater than 0.99, indicating a very high level of agreement between the APP and DAS measurements. For vehicle speed, the average relative error was approximately 0.17%, with most measurement sections exhibiting errors below 0.3%, and a correlation coefficient greater than 0.999. These findings indicate that, when appropriate smartphone mounting and calibration conditions are maintained, a smartphone-based measurement system can reproduce major vehicle dynamic behaviors with a high degree of similarity to a commercial DAS. In conclusion, the low-cost smartphone-based measurement system proposed in this study demonstrated sufficient applicability for analyzing key vehicle driving performance parameters when compared with a commercial DAS. The system can serve as a practical alternative for driving trend analysis, relative performance comparison, and educational and research applications. Furthermore, this study provides a practical foundation for improving accessibility to vehicle driving performance analysis, reducing dependence on expensive measurement equipment, and expanding the utilization of data-driven vehicle dynamics research.
