Among the environmental factors, photoperiod plays an important role in growth of fish. This study was conducted to assess the effects of photoperiod on growth and seawater adaptability of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), a commonly cultured freshwater fish species. The experiment was conducted with three different photoperiod treatments, such as 24 h of light (24L : 00D), 14 h of light and 10 h of dark (14L : 10D), and 24 h of dark (00L : 24D). In addition, the seawater adaptability was tested. Fish was exposed in the three photoperiod conditions and sampled fishes sacrificed to measure growth parameters (weight gain rate, WGR; specific growth rate, SGR; condition factor), survival in seawater, thyroid hormone concentration in plasma and gene expression. Growth parameters, survival in seawater, growth-related gene expression and thyroid hormone concentration was highest in 24L : 00D and lowest in 14L : 10D condition. This study indicates that continous photoperiod positive affect growth and seawater adaptability of rainbow trout.
