최근 국내외 업사이클(upcycling) 분야는 폐기물에서 작품에 이르기까지 폭넓은 활용 범위를 보여주고 있다. 본 연구는 이러한 흐름에 부응하여 환경 문제를 다룬 업사이클 아트의 동향을 살펴, 탄소 중립 실천이 가능한 폐 소재의 재료적 가치를 연구한다. 업사이클 아트의 형상과 현상을 바탕으로 본 연구주제 키워드인 선순환에 대한 개념과 상징적 의미를 설정한다. ‘선순환’ 조형작품 구현에 있어 형식적인 측면과 내용적인 측면을 고려해 폐 소재의 가치 발견과 상징을 부여해 심미적이고 유의적인 조형성을 연구한다. 본 논문에서 규명하고자 함은 업사이클 아트는 그 활용 영역을 확장하여 단순 재활용 이상으로 지속 가능한 그린디자인(Sustainable)의 자원 순환 실천이라는 환경적 메시지와 자연과 인간의 질서, 균형, 조화를 이루는 ‘관계’적 측면의 철학적 개념을 담은 조형작품이라는 것이다. ‘선순환’ 조형작품의 정체성과 재료응용의 조형 실체가 지닌 신 조형성의 유의미적 연구 가치를 확보한다. 이는 환경 보전과 삶의 보상적 균형에 필요한 rethink의 의식과 행동을 실천함으로써 선행 사례가 된다. 조형 분야의 창작(creativity)이 지닌 무한 잠재력과 잠재가치(unrealized value)는 선행 작품 연구의 학술적 의의를 지닌다. 자연, 자원, 인간, 환경의 지속 가능한 문제 해결을 위한 upcycling system의 조형적 창작 활동(art working)이 지속 가능한 친환경(green, clean, safety, well-being)의 예술적, 사회 문화적 환경 점착(adhesion)에 기여하길 기대한다.

This study demonstrates a wide range of applications in the field of upcycling, both domestically and internationally, that discarded materials are transformed into art works. With this trend, we investigate trends of upcycle art that deals with environmental problems and research the value of waste materials that enable carbon neutrality. In implementation of ‘Virtuous Circle’ sculptures, we conduct research esthetic and significant formality by considering formal and conceptual aspects, with discovering value of waste and imbuing symbolic meaning. The objective of this paper is that upcycle art is a formative work that contains a philosophical concept of ‘relationship’ that combines the order, balance, and harmony between nature and humans with the environmental message of green design(sustainable) resource circulation beyond recycling. We have the significant research value of the new formality that has the identity of the "Virtuous Circle" sculpture and the formation of the material application. This becomes a preceding study by practicing consciousness and actions of rethink for environmental preservation and balance of life. The infinite potential and unrealized value of creativity in the plastic arts have academic significance in the study of preceding works. We expect that the upcycling system's art working to solve problems in nature, resources, humans, and the environment will contribute to the artistic and socio-cultural adhesion of green, clean, safety, well-being.
