Bacteriological Effects of Land Pollutants on shellfish Production Area in northern sea area of Gangneung-si, Gangwon-do, Korea at rainfall time Myoung-Hyun Hwang Department of Wellness-Bio Industrial Graduate School Gangneung-Wonju National University Abstract According to OECD-FAO’s 2019 〜 2028 aggregate outlook, per capita seafood intake worldwide will increases from 20.3 kg in 2016 〜 2018 to 21.3 kg in 2028, showing an increase of about 4%. and Korea total shellfish production was 42.1 million tons in 2016, accounting for 12.9% of the total seafood production, 51.2 million tons in 2018, 13.6% of the total seafood production, and 5.0 million tons in 2020, accounting for 13.5% of the total production. Korea annual consumption of single-person fishery products is steadily increasing, with 59.9 kg in 2015, 65.9 kg in 2017, and 69.8 in 2019. and shellfish is considered an important food resource. Shellfish growing area is likely to be exposed directly or indirectly to various factors such ad land pollution sources, stream water, domestic sewage and agriculture water, The bacteriological safety of shellfish, therefore, is very important in the shellfish growing area. This study was carried out to evaluate the Effect of land pollutant on the shellfish production area at rainfall time in northern sea area of Gangneung-si. The total 37 samples (8 of strams water, 3 of domestic sewage, 1 of agriculture water and 25 of seawaters) were collected form northen sea area of Gangneung-si. Quantitative analysis of coliform group and fecal coliform were carried out by most probable number (MPN) method recommended procedures for the examination of bacteria form American Public Health Association (APHA). Shellfish production area in northern sea area of Gangneung-si was Effected bacteriological by land pollutant at rainfall time. At the day before rainfall, the range of fecal coliform in land pollutant sources was 110 〜 92,000 MPN/100 mL, And then, the range of fecal coliform in land pollutant sources was decreased to 170 〜 35,000 MPN/100 mL at 1st day after rainfall. and decreased to 140 〜 24,000 MPN/100 mL at 3rd day after rainfall. and increased to 130 〜 35,000 MPN/100 mL at 5th day after rainfall, and recovered to 79 〜 24,000 MPN/100 mL at 7th day after rainfall. Especially, the land pollutant station D-8(domestic sewage) had the highest level of fecal coliform at the day before and after rainfall. Similar to the recovery tendency of fecal coliform in land pollutant sources, the rang of fecal coliform in seawater at the day before rainfall was <1.8 〜 4.5 MPN/100 mL, and in creased to <1.8 〜 13.0 MPN/100 mL at 1st day after rainfall. And then, the range of fecal coliform in seawater was decreased to <1.8 〜 7.8 MPN/100 mL at 3rd day after rainfall, and recovered to <1.8 〜 4.5 MPN/100 mL at 5th day after rainfall, and recovered to <1.8 〜 2.0 MPN/100 mL at 7th day after rainfall. The above results indicated that the bacteriological quality of seawater in the shellfish growing area by rainfall at northern sea area of Gangneung-so was Effected by fecal coliform of land poluutand source. Additionally, according to the results of evaluating at northern sea of Gangneung-si by Korea shellfish Sanitation program(KSSP) form February 2019 to February 2022, the shellfish growing area at northern sea area of Gangneung-si was maintained the level of approved area. These results it is obtained that land pollutant sources temporarily Effect seawater in shellfish growing area by rainfall time and rainy season at northern sea area of Gangneung-si. Therefore, it is necessary to continuous hygiene management to land pollutant D-8, D-10 which has the high level of fecal coliform.
