Distribution and Population Dynamics of Invasive Alien Species Alliaria petiolata (M.Bieb.) Cavara & Grande

It is known that garlic mustard(Alliaria petiolata), which is a species that has devastated forests in the eastern United States and Canada, plays a role in destroying the ecosystem such as reducing the competitiveness of endemic species and weakening litter decomposing by secreting allelochemicals. It was designated as an ecological disturbance causing species in Korea in 2020 because the seed has a long lifespan and is not easy to remove once it settles. In this study, the domestic distribution of garlic mustard was confirmed, and the precise distribution, growth environment, life cycle, population characteristics, and population dynamics were identified in the Samcheok area, where the largest population in Korea has settled. Considering the stage of occurrence of the garlic mustard population that invaded the Samcheok area, the life cycle was revealed by classifying the age status, and the population dynamics in places with different location requirements were compared. As a result, it could be confirmed that garlic mustard occupied an area of 2,957㎡ in Samcheok and spread widely in the area of Galyasan Mountain. The annual population germinated in April and passed the winter in rosette form, followed by vegetative growth from April 10 to 24, and reproduction from April 24 to May 7 of the following year. Most of the populations began to die in June. Both the annual and biennial populations tended to increase and then decrease as of around April 27(118 days). The plant standing biomass had a high value when the diameter of the diameter of tap root was large, the number of leaves over 1cm was high, and the biomass of the above shoot system was larger than that of the root system. When checking the seed production rate in self-pollination and cross-pollination, seed production was achieved regardless of the presence or absence of pollinating insects, and there was no significant difference. As for the distribution area of garlic mustard, the light conditions were better, compared to undistributed area, the litter layer was less developed, the distance from the road was short, the altitude was low, and it was concentrated in the middle and lower parts of the slope. Based on the derived results, the spread trend of garlic mustard was predicted, and a plant management plan was suggested to help establish a control plan.
