Wetland restoration of urban areas, where the ratio of green space has significantly decreased due to indiscriminate development, is bound to be limited. There are not many studies on the selection of native plants and standards used in ecological wetland restoration projects in Korea. In addition, it is crucial to create a wetland ecosystem as a biotope that connects internal urban areas to neighboring natural ecosystems to strengthen the functions of wetland ecosystems close to the city and expand the potential habitats of organisms in the city. However, these functions are not being appropriately evaluated. The current study assesses the functions of the urban wetlands and evaluates the role and functions of neighboring forest ecosystems as an ecological corridor to expand potential habitats. Conventional rapid assessment method (RAM) evaluations were used as an indicator for inland wetlands. A total of six urban wetlands were selected: Seokchon lake, Wangsong reservoir, Bambat wetland, Gunsan reservoir, Yongsan reservoir, and Gobongsan wetland. Gunsan reservoir received the highest score in the modified RAM evaluation results. The ecosystem service assessment results of Gunsan reservoir were the best indicators of ecological sustainability and were the product of the integration of preservation and development. The Wangsong reservoir, which had the next highest score after the Gunsan reservoir, had an ecosystem service values that developed cities should aspire to. Securing ecological connectivity, which is crucial in ecosystem services, is vital as it is an indicator of development, preservation, and sustainability. This study obtained fundamental data to identify and address the problems in urban wetlands by comparing natural wetlands.
