키츠의 오드에 나타난 이상과 현실의 조화

초록/요약 도움말

John Keats(1795-1821) felt skepticism about his life through all sorts of troubles and ordeal during his short 26 years of existence. He tried to escape from these troubles by seeking the world of fantasy using his imagination. Nevertheless, the important thing in his attempt is that he did not just try escapism, but instead wanted to seek the hope of real life. He obtained enlightenment by accepting the harmony of the ideal and the real, and showed the hope of life and positive will. Keats shows his faith in his poetry The Great Odes, which he wrote in a short period of one year. In his “Ode to Psyche”, Keats seeks to achieve the ultimate achievement of man’s soul as an artist by glorifying the spirit of art depicted by Psyche. In “Ode on Indolence” and “Ode on Melancholy”, Keats considers the contemplation of human emotion, wherein creation can be found in indolence and joy can in melancholy, recognizing values and embracing all conflicting things. “Ode to a Nightingale” and “Ode on a Grecian Urn” are based on beauty in nature and art. Keats experiences a fantasy world using his imagination, but soon, realizes the gap between estrangement and reality. Keats however, shows his awakening by recognizing that the real world is a positive place where life is as vibrant as the fantasy world. In the last poem, “To Autumn”, Keats experiences the contradiction that through passive capacity, the richness and comfort that autumn bring will eventually decline as time goes on. But by acknowledging the cycle of nature, wherein creation and extinction are repeated, and by substituting it for the course of human life and death, Keats soon learns the truth that to die is to live forever. By accepting all aspects of life harmoniously, Keats spiritually acquires a more mature ego. In conclusion, for overcoming the pain of life, Keats attempts the union of all things by combining and acknowledging conflict things like joy and sorrow, creation and extinction, pleasure and pain, infinite and finite, and finally finds the eternal beauty and truth on them and achieves the perfection of himself.
