초록/요약

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of maxillary protraction on dimensional change of the frontal sinus. Materials and Methods: Three-dimensional size of the frontal sinus were evaluated in eighteen patients (10 boys and 8 girls, mean age: 8.9±1.2 years old) who received maxillary protraction therapy (Group 1) and twenty patients (7 boys and 13 girls, mean age: 10.5±1.5 years old) who did not received maxillary protraction therapy (Group 2). Fourteen landmarks of the frontal sinus were identified in pretreatment (T1) and posttreatment (T2) cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. The position of reference points in the x, y, z axis were compared between T1 and T2, and Group 1 and Group 2. Results: Anterior wall of the frontal sinus moved forward while the posterior wall did not displaced at T2. The frontal sinus widened laterally and vertically at T2. Group 1 showed greater anterior movement of the nasomaxillary complex than Group 2. However, there were no significant differences in dimensional change of the frontal sinus between Group 1 and Group 2. Conclusion: The frontal sinus expanded in the anterior, lateral, and superoinferior direction in growing children. However, increase in size of the frontal sinus was not accelerate by the maxillary protraction therapy.
