Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the changes in the kinematic parameters of the masticatory movement and chewing patterns after maxillary protraction and orthodontic treatment in patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion and anterior crossbite. Material and Methods: The sample consisted of the mandibular kinesiography obtained from 23 patients (6 boys and 17 girls; mean age ± SD, 9.9 ± 2.0) who had been treated with a facemask and fixed orthodontic appliances. Mandibular kinesiography was recorded during left- and right-sided gum chewing before (T1) and after treatment (T2). Chewing patterns on the frontal plane and biometric mastication parameters including cycle time, the chewing velocity, and the position of turning point were evaluated. Results: There was no significant change in the chewing time and the chewing velocity. However, the coefficient of variation was decreased significantly at T2. The position of turning point at T2 displaced 2.1 mm more inferiorly and 6.6 mm more posteriorly compared to T1. The prevalence of normal chewing pattern was significantly increased, and chopping type chewing pattern was significantly decreased at T2. Conclusions: Maxillary protraction using facemask and second phase orthodontic treatment improved the kinematic parameters of masticatory movement and chewing patterns in patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion and anterior crossbite.
