국문초록 이 논문은 삼척지역에서 전승되고 있는 허목설화에 드러나는 다양한 의식세계를 구명해 보는 것도 의미 있는 연구가 되리라 생각한다. 민중은 설화 속에서 자신과 자신을 둘러싼 부정적이거나 긍정적인 삶의 모습을 여러 가지 양상의 허목설화를 통하여 표출시켰고, 민중의 심리에 어떻게 반영되었는가를 살펴보고자 한다. 먼저, 허목설화를 유형별로 분류하고 특징을 밝힌 다음, 그 속에 투영된 민중의식을 구명하고자 한다. 특히 보통사람보다 뛰어난 능력을 지닌 허목전설의 형상 지향에 중점을 두었다. 이 논문은 허목전설의 형성 배경과 이야기에 대한 전반적인 유형을 알아보는 것에서 시작하여 지역적 특성을 지니고 있는 허목전설의 유형 특징과 형상 지향에 대해 분석하고자 하였다. 그리고 이를 통해 허목전설에 나타난 지역의 애민의식을 알아보는 것을 목적으로 하였다. Ⅱ장에서는 『허미수의 삶과 학통』과 『미수연구논집』및 『한국구비문학대계』를 기본 자료로 하여 인물 전설의 형성 배경을 정리하였다. Ⅲ장에서는 인물전설의 이야기 유형을 분류하여 선정(善政)형, 기이(奇異)형, 인품(人品)형편 순으로 고찰했다. 먼저 선정(善政)형에서는 민중은 허목에게 앞날을 내다보고 원하는 것은 무엇이든 취할 수 있는 도술력을 부여하여 우리민족의 역사 속에서 민중 영웅을 간절하게 바라던 민초들의 민중의식과 전설의 미의식을 감상하는 가치를 지닌다고 할 수 있다. 이는 민중들의 기대심리를 통한 이상적인 지방수령의 모습을 제시한다. 기이(奇異)형에서는 현실에서 일어나기 어려운 허황된 이야기가 많으며 인물을 더욱 비범하게 보이게 하거나, 일어난 일을 특별한 일로 만들기 위해 현실에서 일어날 수 없는 일을 제시한다. 인품(人品)형은 허목을 뛰어난 인물로 보이게 하는 이야기 구조로 남다르게 태어나서 어릴 때부터 비범한 능력을 보이며 학문과 관련하여 정직한 정치가, 좋은 글을 짓고 쓰는 예술가의 모습을 드러낸다. 부모에 대한 극진한 효심은 물론 따뜻한 우정을 나누었다는 이야기도 제시된다. Ⅳ장에서는 Ⅲ장에서 살펴 본 이야기 유형을 바탕으로 하여 이에 나타난 허목전설의 초월적 존재로서의 형상과 애민의식의 구현을 고찰해 보았다. 먼저 허목과 송시열의 일화로 따뜻한 우정을 나누었다는 것이고, 다음으로 척주동해비(퇴조비)로 조수의 피해를 막기 위해 세웠다는 이야기다. 마지막으로 초능력적인 힘을 가지고 민중들의 어려움을 해결해 주는 구원자로서의 역할로 민중들의 기대심리를 통한 바람직한 지방수령의 모습을 제시 하였다. 이상으로 허목전설의 이야기 유형과 형상지향 연구에 대한 분석을 통해 지역의 애민의식을 고찰해 보았다. 『허미수의 삶과 학통』과 『미수연구논집』및 『한국구비문학대계』이 외에도 많은 설화 자료들이 있고 지금도 계속해서 설화채록이 이루어지고 있으리라 보기에 허목전설에 대해 앞으로도 더 많은 분석과 고찰이 이루어질 수 있을 것이다. 또한 허목전설에 대한 지역의 설화를 더 많이 분석함으로서 더 깊은 고찰을 이끌어낼 수 있으므로 차후의 과제들이 많이 남아 있다고 본다. 앞으로 계속 인물전설에 대해 연구되기를 바라며, 연구의 폭을 넓혀갈 기회를 갖고자 한다. ※ 본 논문은 2016년 8월 강릉원주대학교 교육대학원 위원회에 제출된 교육학 석사학위 논문임.

Abstract This study aims to determine various domains of consciousness that are revealed in the tales of Heo Mok. People expressed the aspects of life surrounding them, either positive or negative, through various types of tales of Heo Mok, so this study is to examine how they were reflected in the people’s mentality. By categorizing tales of Heo Mok by types, it is to describe the characteristics of each tale and determine the popular consciousness reflected in them. In particular, it focused on the image-orientation of tales of Heo Mok, who has outstanding abilities than ordinary people. This study began by examining the background behind the formation of tales of Heo Mok and their general types, and intended to analyze the characteristics of each type, which have regional characteristics, and the image-orientation of the tales. Through this, it was to study the sense of love of people in regions appearing in the tales of Heo Mok. Chapter 2 described the backgrounds behind the formation of character legends, based on 『Life and Scholastic Mantle of Heo Misu』, 『Misu Research Journal』 and 『Collection of Korean Oral Literature』. Chapter 3 categorized the types of character legends and examined in the order of exemplary government type, strange type and character type. First, in the exemplary government type, people grants Heo Mok with the magical power to foresee the future and get whatever desired, holding the value of admiring popular consciousness of the people, who sincerely hoped for a peoples hero, and the aesthetic consciousness of legend. This suggests the ideal image of local leader through the expectation of the people. In strange type, there are many absurd stories that can’t happen in reality, which present incidents that can’t happen in reality to make the character more remarkable or the incident more special. Character type has the structure that makes Heo Mok into an outstanding figure, revealing the images of an honest politician in relation to academics, and an artist that writes good writings with his remarkable abilities since young. Based on the types of stories examined in Chapter 3, Chapter 4 studied the image in the tales of Heo Mok as a transcendental existing and the realization of the sense of love of people. First is about the story of Heo Mok and Song Si-yeol sharing warm friendship, and another is about the story about establishing Cheokjudonghaebi Monument to prevent damage by tide. Last story is about a savior that solves people’s difficulties with supernatural powers, presenting a desirable image of local leader through people’s expectations. As above, this study examined the sense of love of people through the analysis of story types in tales of Heo Mok and study on image-orientation. As there are much more data on tales besides Life and Scholastic Mantle of Heo Misu』, 『Misu Research Journal』 and 『Collection of Korean Oral Literature』 and recording of tales is being continued, more analyses and examinations on the tales of Heo Mok may occur in the future. Also, by analyzing local tales on Heo Mok legends, it may lead to more in-depth examination, leaving more tasks for the future.
