Abstract The Usage of English Present Perfect Lee, A-jin Department of English Language and Literature Graduate School, Gangneung National University The purpose of this thesis is to help Koreans properly understand and use English present perfect since there is no concept like present perfect in Korean. Of English, for Koreans, it is one of the most difficult parts. In chapter Ⅱ, as background knowledge, to adequately study English present perfect, 'tense' and 'aspect' are compared. In chapter Ⅲ, the traditional analysis of English present perfect, depending on six scholars, is presented. Also, present perfect and simple past tense are compared based on 'current relevance' and 'temporal adverbs', in chapter Ⅳ. In addition, there is the result of a study conducted to identify the actual use of present perfect, using the script of an American drama, 'Modern Family'. As a result of this study, I have the following conclusions. First, the concept of 'tense' and 'aspect' needs to be educated in Korea to properly understand English present perfect. In Korea, students have been taught present perfect as one of 12 tense systems. So they tend to understand that present perfect is similar to simple past tense because they both are related to past. If they are not taught the concept of the aspect and the difference between 'tense' and 'aspect', Koreans will continue to be confused between present perfect and simple past tense. Second, many scholars tried to classify the usage of English present perfect using different terms but they are similar to one another, even that of Korean schools grammar. In Korean schools grammar it is divided into four parts; 'continuation', ‘experience', 'result' and 'completion'. Third, the same sentence using present perfect can have different usage depending on contexts and adverbs. This occurs most frequently between 'result' usage and 'completion' usage. As discussed in this thesis, Leech(1971) also indicated it. According to him, the same sentence with present perfect can have either 'resultative past' or 'indefinite past' and it depends on adverbs. That is, if the sentence includes adverbs such as 'ever', 'never', 'before' and so on, it can be considered as 'indefinite past'. If not, on the other hand, it can be considered as 'resultative past'. Fourth, the most obvious difference between present perfect and simple past tense is 'current relevance'. Present perfect focuses on 'now', while simple past tense focuses on 'then'. Present perfect accepts 'current relevance', but simple past tense doesn't. Fifth, according to this study, present perfect without certain temporal adverbs is used much more frequently than with ones in daily lives. There are some adverbs, such as recently, already, before, etc., which can be used both with present perfect and simple past tense. However, Koreans have been taught the difference between present perfect and simple past tense only by certain temporal adverbs. Of course, adverbs can make the meaning of present perfect more clear, but in light of this thesis, we have to change the way to teach present perfect.
