In 19th century, a trend of Nationalism had appeared in Spainish music, and a group of nationalism musicians have appeared in Spain. Spain’s Nationalism music used folk melody and rhythms and it showed Spanish unique Ethnic sentiments based on their ethnic scales with use of augmented 2nd notes, the E mode system, Gypsy minor scale, and Arabian scale. And this trend has influenced most of Spanish composers of 20th century. Among them, J. Rodrigo is classified as a representative Neoclassical composer in 20th century. He composed music with Nationalism musical elements and Neoclassical techniques. This study is focused on analysing musical contents, musical elements, and musical treatment of lyrics in「Cuatro Madrigales Amatorios」 (Four Madrigals of Love) - 1) ¿Con qué la lavaré? (How to Wash?), 2) Vos me matásteis (You Deprived My Life), 3) ¿De dónde venís, amore? (Where do you come from, my dear?), 4) De los álamos vengo, madre (Beside a Poplar Tree) which composed by J. Rodrigo. And it could make conclusion of the characteristical trend of J. Rodrigo. As the result of analyzing Rodrigo’s「Cuatro Madrigales Amatorios(Four Madrigals of Love), this study found musical characteristics as follows. <The first song> ¿Con qué la lavaré? (How can I Wash?) Its musical characteristics is usage of Arpeggios that could remind of guitar’s Rasgueado technique. And Spanish ornamentations, consecutive progress of simple chord, and use of Stretto technique represent Spanish Nationalism. Second, the song includes classical styles such as contrapuntal contrary motions, modal change to relative key, simultaneously with parallel fifth which shows an influence of Impressionism and many dissonant notes in modern manner. <Second Song> Vos me matáteis (You Deprived My Life) First, it shows the usage of repetition of rhythm and melodies, repetition of lyrics, and usage of Spanish ornamentations, which are elements of Spanish Nationalism. Second, the song utilizes dissonant whole tones, coincident use of dissonant notes and consonant chords, modal change to relative key, contrapuntal imitation and pedal sound in Baroque style. This shows a trend of Neoclassical music. <Third Song> ¿De dónde venís, amore? (Where do you come from, my dear?) First, it shows the elements of Spanish Nationalism with the usage of staccato which reminds of punteado of a guitar, usage of Spanish melisma and ornamentations, and repetition of lyrics. Second, the song utilizes contrapuntal contrary motion in Baroque style and the frequent usage of dissonant notes, poly-rhythms, and bi-tonality in moden manner. Third, there shows parallel eighth which is influenced by Impressionistic music. <Fourth Song> De los álamos vengo, madre (Beside a Poplar Tree) First, this song shows typical elements of Spanish Nationalism with usage of simple code, repetition of same rhythm and melody, Spanish melisma and ornamentations, and repetition of lyrics. It shows the most Spanish Nationalistic music color among the four songs. As the conclusional result, the researcher found that Rodrigo’s「Cuatro Madrigales Amatorios (Four Madrigals of Love) includes the musical characteristics of the Spainish Nationalism and Frech impressionism, and that Neoclassical music elements are expressed very intensively.
