Crown-root angulations of the maxillary anterior teeth in Korean malocclusion patients: A cone-beam computed tomography study

Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare the crown-root angulations of the permanent maxillary anterior teeth in skeletal Class I, Class II, and Class III Korean malocclusion patients using CBCT images. Materials and Methods: Sixty CBCT images were collected from orthodontic patient archive based on the skeletal Class I (0˚<ANB<4˚), Class II (ANB≥4˚), and Class III (ANB≤0˚) to meet 20 samples in each group. The crown-root angulations were evaluated on each coronal and sagittal planes after orientation of the images. The crown-root angulations were compared among Class I, Class II, and Class III patients. Results: The crown-root angulations on the sagittal plane of the maxillary central incisor and the lateral incisor were significantly smaller in Class III group than Class I group. However, those of the canine showed no differences among the groups. The crown-root angulations on the coronal plane of the maxillary anterior teeth did not significantly differ among the groups. Conclusions: Our results suggest that the crown-root angulations of the maxillary incisors may be different among skeletal malocclusions. It is not sure that these results caused by genetic factors or environmental factors, but the crown-root angulation may differ according to the various malocclusion patterns.
