초록/요약
Purpose: This study is a descriptive correlational research to provide basic data for the improvement of patient safety by investigating the relationship among patient safety culture, attitude toward fall, and fall prevention activities of care workers in long-term care facilities. Methods: Data were collected from 190 care workers on long-term care facilities in G, S, and W cities from 9 August 2014 to 2 October 2014. To measure patient safety culture, the tool for 27 items of Korean patient safety culture for nursing homes developed by Sukhui Yun et al. (2013) is used. To measure attitude toward fall, the tool for 13 items of attitude toward fall developed by Cheolgyu Kim (2002) is used. To measure the degree of fall prevention activities, the tool for 13 items of fall prevention activities that Minyeong Kim (2008) developed and Sanghui Kim (2013) modified and complemented is used. Data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe post-hoc test, and Pearson correlation coefficients with SPSS/WIN 21.0 Program. Results: There are each positive correlations between patient safety culture and attitude toward fall (r=.51, p<.001), and patient safety culture and fall prevention activities (r=.47, p<.001). There is a statistically significant positive correlation between attitude toward fall and fall prevention activities (r=.35, p<.001). The less work experience and the more positive evaluation of a level of safety management accompany well-established patient safety culture. The more positive evaluation of a level of safety management accompanies positive attitude toward fall and high practice of fall prevention activities. The less experience of safety accidents comes with good practice of fall prevention activities. Conclusion: As an aspect of nursing education, nurses who have responsibilities to educate and supervise elder helpers in long-term care facilities should enhance patient safety education considering care workers’ careers. Nurses also should establish a system that evaluates objectively patient safety management activity including fall prevention activities. In terms of nursing practice, nurses should improve welfare in management activity area as a subcategory of patient safety culture, improve organizational system by analyzing after the accident and preparing prevention plan, and show their leadership. These activities facilitate establishing firmly care workers’ patient safety culture, taking action of active attitude toward fall, and enhancing fall prevention activities. As an aspect of nursing theory and research, replication study can be done because there might be differences among degree of patient safety culture, attitude toward fall, and fall prevention activities based on various indexes include size of long-term care facilities, occupations of nursing staff, and level of ensuring nurses.
