초록/요약

This study aims to present differences in English between will and be going to, would and used to in discourse. These forms encode futurity in will/be going to and past habituality in used to/would. Even though the functions of these forms are the same in semantics, they differ from each other in the discourse-pragmatics level. That's why ESL/EFL students are often confused about what they should choose between them. It is the main concern in this paper to inquire closely why one expression comes first when the other is in the same discourse. In order to see the fact, the difference between each pair is to be found in various contexts of the utterance in which they occur. When we compare will/would and be going to/used to, the latter seems to be related to current relevance. Furthermore, it is found that the sentences containing be going to and used to is often more elliptical and have present indication. To explain this, examination of each pair form in various contexts shows that be going to/used to are frame and will/would are elaboration. Given this fact, it is possible to account for be going to and used to by setting up a frame for subsequent elaboration within the frame established by the previously mentioned item in each pair. As a result, I present the "Frame-Elaboration Hypothesis". It reads as follows. When be going to and will occur sequentially to organize discourse describing future situations, be going to provides the frame for the future events and will provides elaboration within the frame. Similarly, when used to and would occur sequentially to configure discourse describing past situations, used to provides the frame for the past events and would provides elaboration within the frame. This paper notes the ways in which each form behaves to indicate present meaning. This study assumes that the major differences between the competing forms can be captured in a unified manner when we consider choosing one thing.
