This study investigated and compared the body composition and resting metabolic rate of pre-menopausal(n=28) and post-menopausal(n=30) women in Kangnung area. The average age showed a significant difference between pre-menopausal women 42.6 ? 4.2years and post-menopausal women 55.2 ? 2.5 years. But height(158.7cm, 156.1cm), weight(57.5kg, 58.1kg) and body mass index(22.9kg/m^(2), 23.8kg/m^(2) were not significant difference. The body fat(%) of post-menopausal women(34.7%) was significantly higher than those of pre-menopausal women(29.5%), whereas the fat free mass(FFM) and muscle mass(%) of pre-menopausal women(40.4kg, 38.3%) was significantly lower than that of post-menopausal women(37.7kg, 35.0%). The RMR measured by indirect calorimeter, RMR/weight(kg), RMR/body fat(kg) of the pre-menopausal women(1248 ? 112.9kcal/day, 22.1kcal/kg, 79.8kcal/kg) was significantly higher than that of post-menopausal women(1184 ?105.1kcal/day, 20.7kcal/kg, 60.7kcal/kg). On the other, RMR/muscle(57.5kcal/kg, 59.2kcal/kg) and RMR/fat free mass(31.2kcal/kg, 31.8kcal/kg) of pre-menopausal and post-menopausal women was not significant difference. Resting metabolic rate measured and predicted by equations( Harris-Benedict, DRI, WHO/FAO/NAO, Cunningham, Owen, Liu) were compared. Measured RMR was compared with predicted RMR by means of paired t-test, RMSPE, linear regression analysis and the Bland-Altman test. Relationships between measured RMR and the different predictive variable were evaluated by Pearson's correlation coefficient. The results from the DRI and Owen equations were not significantly differences from the measured resting metabolic rate.
