초록/요약

The writer Park In-hwan lived in a miserable times as he told himself. He spent his life in the midst of the Japanese occupation, the conflict between the right and the left after liberation and the war itself. However, through a critical and civic-minded spirit, he tried to convey the important messages in his works about the contemporary society he lived. It is essential to study his works in the context of his times to understand the man himself better. The starting point of this study is to examine the previous studies of his works. The attempts to study his works started with the essays written by writers surrounding him. The essays leads to the later studies with the modernistic approach towards his poems. The trend of the recent studies is to analyze Park In-hwan's works through realism. In this case, these studies are valuable in that the reality is described as it is even though it is painful, the sense of anxiety is originated from his own involvement in the war and the conflict after the liberation, and the criticisms of the civilization and the fundamental questions of existence also come from the reality. The second chapter is focused on the works written after the liberation. His works are divided into two parts ; one is the criticism of the chaotic society and the other is the criticism of the imperialism. The criticism of the disorderly society is about refusing the chaotic reality and changing it. But regrettably he is passively waiting for the change rather than looking for the direction of the change actively. His criticism of the imperialism is about encouraging struggles by telling about the Asian countries under the control of imperialists in the forms of poems. It is regrettable for him to pay attention to the foreign countries rather than to our own country but it is remarkable for him to recognize the reality clearly. The third chapter deals with the works during and after the war. First he tells about his own experience in the form of poems. He tells about his own experience in the war in which he had participated as a reporter. He is showing the deaths of the soldiers who were participating in the war with him, the suffering of the injured and the fears which arise from watching those. Second he is telling about the individual's pain and the tragedy of the war. Of course here he is not showing the spirit of overcoming those in the objective eyes, rather he is just showing the reality that the war left behind and the reality destroyed meaninglessly by the war. It is regrettable for him not to show the overcoming spirit, but it is meaningful that he is showing the reality that time in a realistic way. And finally this study is about his retrospective into the past. This study is about his prospect of the reality in his works known as one of his representatives such as ‘목마와 숙녀‘ 와 ’세월이 가면‘. These two novels with the reputation of the representative modernistic novels show that he does not still forget the past. And in the other poems he is not conscious of the reality. Only the memory of the past is recurring against his will and he tells he'd better think about the past lest that the memory of the past will not recur. This study was focused on the situation where the writer Park In -hwan experienced during the war and after the liberation. At that time he was sensitive to the chaotic reality and he conveyed his critical spirit in his works. Follow-up studies will also need to analyze his poems in realistical approaches. Before studying his works from modernistic angles which have been controversial, there is a strong need to study his underlying view of reality.
