초록/요약

Modern art has evolved continuously throughout the passage of historical changes and circumstances of the Industrial Revolution and of the First and Second World Wars of the early 20^(th) century. As new civilizations and modern societies develop, art follows the demands of the new times to get closer to the public. The introduction of pop art has encouraged artists to break away from the traditional methods. The works of art, using ready-made articles, have shocked the art circles as they display quite a different image from the conventional ones, which is actually a challenge to the traditional concept of art. Since 1960s, pop art has rebelled against abstract expressionism, so pop artists have created works that use cinematic techniques, TV commercials, and newspapers and magazines, which express images of ordinary objects. Claes Oldenburg is a predominant artist, and his work concept was built duringthe turning point of the modern art. He used common material, made of commodities found on the streets easily, and which can be being produced in bulk. He made modem sculpture popular in the public by expressing the sculpturesin an objective physical form with various techniques based upon environmental harmony. Moreover, these became familiar and intimate to the public, especially because of the character of this formative art. The objet works of Claes Oldenburg criticized the limit of mode art by approaching an objet in a sociological way. He applied a common and stereotyped subject, revealing wit and humor, which is invigorating to the public and to art as well, while an objet, suggested by other pop writers, used to show the slice of the public media and the consumer society. As you may notice in his early work, "Happening," he unified visual art, environment, and drama as one, and revealed a comprehensive mode in time and space. As he expressed machinery and commodity as an outcome of modern society as vinyl and fabric in his work, "Soft Peace," he de-functioned what was originally made. It was a radical movement to take his works, which contained environmental elements such as, "Happening"and "Soft Peace,"to an open place amidst a more vivid environment, rather than keeping them in a sealed art gallery space, place was selected in consideration of social, historical, and geological background so as to communicate with the public and try to re-synthesize social circumstances and art and sublimate it in abstract character of the place, which the contemporary public sculptures have in their social circumstances. This article has researched the characteristics of pop art revealed in Claes Oldenburg's works, who was one of the model artists of 1960 and who focused more upon the image and the environmental side and thus, influenced the modern art by his formative ideology.
