Part Ⅰ. Assessment of Daily Steps, Physical Activities and Activity Coefficient in Shift-work Policemen The purpose of this study was to assess the daily steps, physical activities and activity coefficient of policemen who do shift work. Body weight, height and daily step were measured and one-day activity diaries were collected by interviewing with policemen. The average age of the subjects was 31.5±5.1 years. Average height, weight, bmi, body fat and muscle of subjects were 173.1±5.2cm, 73.7±9.7kg, 24,6kg/㎡, 15.5±1.9% and 37.3±5.8%, respectively. The average daily step of the subjects were 9,812 on day shift duty, 10,888 on night shift duty, and 6,551 on holiday duty, among which on night shift duty recorded the most average steps. The hourly average steps were 1,945 in day shift, 2,130 night shift, 1,318 holiday, among which the highest also falls under night time duty. Their sleeping hours were 13 hours (780 minutes) in holiday, which come under 54.1 % of the day, compared with the consuming time taken by each activity step, based on the 5th datum of Japanese nutrition consumption. The consuming time taken for the lowest activity appears to be 91.5% in holiday but 70.0% in night shift, which was less than that in holidy. The activity coefficients of the subjects was 1.75 in night shift, which turned out to be relatively higher than 1.75 in day shift and 1.31 in holiday. Consequently, the research showed that both amounts and details in day shift activity were outstandingly different from that in night shift. The results of this study can be used as the important data when the energy requirement of policemen is set up. Part Ⅱ. Resting Metabolic Rate and Daily Energy Expenditure in Shift-work Policemen This research measured off shift-working policemen's resting metabolic rate (RMR) and evaluated the propriety of the projected RMR value drawn from various pre-estimating formulae. For this purpose body examination of 28 shift-working policemen was taken, especially including weight, triceps skinfold thickness, mid-arm circumfernce, muscle mass, etc. The RMR also was measured by using indirect calorimetry (TrueOne2400) and the participants' RMR was drawn from various predicted resting metabolic rates (Harris-Benedict formula, BSA-BMR, WHO/FAO/NAO formula, DRI formula, Cunningham's, Miffer et al's Owen et al's). The participants' average age was 31.5 years old, height and weight, respectively 173.1 cm and 73.7 kg. Their body fat percents and mulse mass percents were 15.5% and 37.3%. Their RMR measured with indirect calorimetry was 1748 kcal. One-day energy consumption calculated with this RMR multiplied by each activity coefficient resulting from shift-work appeared to be 3,062 kcal at night-duty, which was outstandingly the highest, the next was 2,647 kcal at day-duty and the lowest was 2,310 kcal at holiday-duty. According to RMSPEs (Root Mean Squared Prediction Errors) calculated with the difference between an actual RMR and a projected RMR, Cunningham formula had the least, 177.7 kcal and other formulae containing Liu, etc. had the highest, 298.1 kcal. The real RMR turned up a closely approximated interrelation with the projected RMR from the Cunningham formula. The one-day of energy intake participants was 2,351 kcal at day-duty, 1,959 kcal at night-duty and 1796 kcal at holiday-duty in order. The three-day energy intake according to the type of shift-work appeared to be lower than those of one-day energy intake, especially distinctly low (p<0.05) at night-duty. As a result of this research it could be concluded that the shift-working policemen didn't take as much nourishment as they consumed.
