One of the most important issues in the education for the developmental disorders is to improve self concepts. This will help each of them to be a member of society so that they can overcome the difficulties that they are faced with due to their handicaps. However, there have been few programs organized to help them understand their situations and establish their own self-images. In particular, mentally retarded students tend to suffer from inferiority feelings and feel frustrated due to their inabilities and deficiencies. This sense of inferiority and frustration results in helplessness, lack of interpersonal relationships, loss of confidence, and accumulated anger, and, as a result, has a negative effect on their growth. This study was done to see if group counseling for the mentally retarded students would influencing on their self-images, and if it does affect them, what the effect would be. The subjects were 10 mentally retarded students at a middle school for the special education. Their Intelligence Quotients (IQ) was as follows: four had IQs between 50 and 70, six between 35 and 49. They joined group counseling for 20 sessions. The result indicates that there were significant changes both in the academic self concept and non-academic self concepts which include 8 sub-areas (physical ability, physical appearance, relation with same sex, relation with opposite sex, relation with parents, honesty/ trustworthiness, emotional stability, general self). Above all, the Total Self-Concept was improved at a statistically significant level. Even though group counseling is supposed to be done to the people who are at some intellectual range, if the program is reorganized for the mentally retarded, it may have positive effects on them. If mentally retarded students can have positive self images, they can help them adapt to society. Furthermore, group counseling programs for the students who have lower IQs than the subjects in this study need to be developed and adopted for their betteradjustments.
