초록/요약

The early and middle of 20 century is the time of not accepting various experiments and traditions on music. However, there has been another stream which tried to keep conventional musical techniques. Francis Poulenc(1899-1963), a member of Les Six who was a mainstream on modern French music, stuck to the traditional musical techniques and the composition of lied and religious music. Flute Sonata, which was composed in 1956 when many experiments on music were conducted, revealed that he adhered to the conventional musical techniques. This study has analyzed the Flute Sonata which was one of his major work on music. As a result, many specific characteristic associated with his works were discovered through this study. First of all, he employed a cyclic form showing the traditional composition principles, unity-in-variety, although he didn’t follow the conventional Sonata form. In addition, he utilized melodies which well showed the features of melody instruments. This characteristic is represented in figure used as a subject material which is in contrast to the third movement as well as a subject melody in both the first abd the second movements. These melodies are reinforced through the subrogation of flute and piano. The Flute Sonata is a work which makes use of a conventional formation musical technique form the perspective of harmony. He always utilized dominant chord in order to make the context of formation clear. On the other hand, he made an attempt to show the Romanticism within the boundary of the Classicism by emphasizing chromatic-scale consonance and obvious dissonance. Based on these points mentioned above, the Flute Sonata well represents Poulenc’s musical work where he tried to find his own color in relation to the traditional musical techniques. Beside, this song becomes of a music which well describes flute’s timbre and colorful rendition with classical components of strong tonality without key signature. Moreover, it shows modern features of frequent modulation, abrupt harmony, chromatic scale, multiple chords, various rhythm and subrogation melodies and theme circulation.
