초록/요약
Shakespeare’s Problem Plays are Troilus and Cressda(1602), All’s Well That Ends Well(1603), and Measure for Measure(1604). It has been supposed that they had been written between his time of early comedies and tragedies. They have been a subject of argument about themes which are out of comedy convention. I would like to categorize the Problem Plays into three. Frist, love is not so much mental relationship as physical desire. In Troilus and Cressda, Troilus idealizes Cressda as a pearl before the consummation, but he discards and sends to her for Greek captain Deomedes after sexual affair. The character of Cressda has long become fixed as a wanton. In All’s Well That Ends Well, Helen wants to marry Bertram who becomes Count of Roussillon because of his social status. Bertram gets away from her and he intends to make love to another woman. In Measure for Measure love is only lechery, so it is filled with sickness such as syphilis, prostitution, and so on. Deputy Angelo means to have sexual relation with Isabella at novice, so her chastity becomes in danger. Second, function of marriage is changed extraordinary. In fact it was a typical device of happy ending in the early comedies. But Cressida betrays Troilus, and they separate. Marriage represents symbol of corruption of a patriarchal sexual order in Troilus and Cressda. In last scene of All’s Well That Ends Well, Helen accomplishes impossible tasks which were suggested by Bertram. Therefore he must have admitted her as the mother of his child and the real wife. The marriage represents the reproduction of social structure. In last of Measure for Measure, Duke Vincentio who came back to a position of a power commands four pairs of weddings. The weddings establish his position as divine kingship. At last, the closure of Problem Plays creates intricate issues. Today the genre of the three plays is a main theme of scholars studying Shakespeare’s Plays. In Troilus and Cressda, it is a measure of the heroic diction Troilus achieves that the final speeches must be followed by Pandarus’ scurrilous epilogue. The play comes to open ending. In All’s Well That Ends Well, Bertram capitulates to Helen as silence, so we don’t assume that they are reconciled. In last scene of Measure for Measure, Duke makes a proposal for Isabella. She does not respond because she is votarists of Saint Clare. Her chastity is more important than her brother's life or the position of a wife. Shakespeare endeavors to get a polished dramaturgy in Problem Plays. It has been intermediated between early comedies and tragedies. It has also been evaluated as turning point of his literary achievements.
