초록/요약
본 논문의 목적은 영어 교육에 있어서 미국 문화 이해의 중요성을 인식하고 영어 학습에 있어서 효과적인 미국 문화의 교육 방안에 대해 연구한 것이다. 언어는 대화에 있어서 단순한 음성 상징일 뿐만 아니라 그 언어를 사용하는 사람들의 사회 문화적 환경, 습관, 숙련성, 예술의 산물인 것이다. 외국어를 학습하는 것은 그 외국어가 말해지는 사회의 문화를 이해하는 것이다. 따라서 영어 교사는 영어뿐만 아니라 영어를 사용하는 나라의 문화도 가르쳐야 할 것이다. 즉, 교사는 상대국의 문화의 차이점을 이해하여야 하며 서로의 문화적 배경에 대해 비교할 줄 알아야 한다. 본 논문은 5장으로 구성되었다. 1장은 본 논문의 일반적인 내용을 소개하였으며, 2장은 언어와 문화의 상호관계에 대해서 규명하였고, 3장은 두 문화의 차이점을 비교하고 분석하였다. 4장에서는 교실에서의 올바른 문화의 이해에 대한 방안을 모색하였다. 영어 교사는 학생들에게 문화적 배경에 대한 이해를 도움으로써 의사소통능력을 개선시킬수 있도록 문화에 대한 교육을 교실에서 수업할 수 있다. 학생은 교과서와 문화 이해를 돕기 위한 도구를 이용하여 문화와 친숙해질 수 있다. 본 논문은 영어 학습은 영어를 사용하는 국가의 문화적 배경에 대한 정확하고 적절한 정보를 학생에게 마련함으로써 영어를 좀 더 쉽게 학습할 수 있음을 제안한다. 영어를 사용하는 국가의 문화를 이해하는 것은 의사소통 능력을 개선하는데에 필수적이다. 따라서 영어 교사는 영어 학습자들에게 미국 문화와 자국의 문화 사이의 유사점과 차이점을 잘 파악할 수 있도록 도와야 할 것이다.

The purpose of thes thesis is to recognize the importance of understanding American culture in English education and to study the ways of teaching American culture for effective English language learning Language is not the only vocal symbols used in communication but a product of its socio-cultural environment, customs, skill, arts and tools which characterize those who use it. Learning a foreign language is the same as understading the culture of the society where the language is spoken. Accordingly, English teachers must teach not only English itself but also the culture of English speaking countries. That is, teachers, and to compare the culturel backgrounds of each other. This thesis is composed of five chapters ; Chapter one introduces overall ideas of this thesis ; Chapter two defines the mutual relationship between languages and cultures ; Chapter three compares and analyzes the differences between the two cultures ; Chpter four suggests teaching methods of proper understanding of the cultures in the classrooms. English teachers should bring a culture education into their classrooms so as to help their students to improve their communicative competences by letting them understand the backgrounds of the cultures. Students should be familiar with culture, making the best use of their texbooks and taking advantage of the cultural materials. This thesis suggests that English learning can be achieved more easily by the students if they are provided with more accurate and adequate informations about the cultural backgrounds of English speaking countries. In short, understanding the culture of an English speaking country is essential to improve the students' English communicative competence. Therefore, English teachers should help English learners to get an insight into similarities and differences between American culture and their own.
