초록/요약

The 21st century is called the information Age also characterized by worldwide globalization trend. To stay abreast with social shifts, client-centered education that aims for enhancing creative thinking faculty and learning capability is increasingly stressed, and the 7th national curricula have gradually been executed since 2002. The most distinctive feature in the curricula is that they are in pursuit of learner-centered differentiated education and intend to teach students to take initiative in future society and have a good citizenship. To be in line with the intent of the curricula, new textbooks are produced. Specifically, new national history textbook for high school grade is a far cry from the existing one, as it is larger in size, have better-quality papers and contains a variety of bigger and vivid materials, such as color photographs, maps, diagrams and pictures. Since the current curricula call for various types of learning materials, including historic map, chronological table, graph, realia and audio-visual data, to draw attention from learners and enable them to inquire into history on their own, the textbook is designed to meet the requirement and excel the past one. Textbook is the most economical and systematic learning material. And illustration date included in it are one of the useful visual materials to stimulate learner interest and facilitate inquiry learning. They could provide motivation to students, enhance their understanding of class and offer much more sustainable knowledge than spoken or written language could do. Furthermore, students will be given more realistic opportunities to reexperience and reinterpret historical facts, and they will be able to have a critical mind and historical thinking faculty, such as interpretation and inquiry process skills, which is one of the major tasks in history education. To make textbook illustration materials work properly, it's needed to increase their accuracy and adequacy. The purpose of this study was to examine the illustration data in the new 7th national history textbook, compare it with the 6th one and determine its relevance, in an effort to find out what problems it faced and in which way better illustration data could be inserted to national history textbook. For that purpose, the concept, selection method and educational significance of illustration materials were investigated, and statistical analysis was made by era, area and type to see whether the illustration data in the 7th textbook were well organized and appropriate and to what extent is was faithful to the intent of the curricula. For content analysis, the 7th and 6the textbooks were compared by type of materials to figure out how much change the 7th one made and what problems there were. As a result, the 7th textbook was found to offer more detailed caption and comment for better learner understanding and try to eliminate the problem pointed out in the past about the type of illustration materials. The textbook was of greater use by presenting a lot of illustrations, but their accuracy and adequacy weren't yet fully guaranteed. The educational merit and usefulness of illustrations are very great since they provide learners with enriched supplementary information that is difficult to convey in written language, and could eventually raise the interest and understanding of learners. If there are sustained efforts to prepare better illustrations, the use of illustration data will be the easiest and surest way to make history class successful.
