A Study on the Gradation of Knowledge of the Korean Language in Middle School

The purpose of this study is to analyze the problems of content selection and content system in the middle school Korean knowledge domain, and select new content, and compose new system, based on the analytic results. The seventh national curriculum for the subject of Korean regards understanding and knowledge as the basis of using the Korean language, addressing, "Fostering an ability to use Korean in various Korean using situations by learning basic knowledge of language activity and literature." The Korean knowledge domain in the subject of Korean becomes the most basic for language education, and is the domain providing base knowledge required for the improvement of an ability to use Korean, not just delivering knowledge. However, in the front line of school education, the education in the domain of Korean knowledge is not effectively carried out, compared to its importance. Education content or its composition is not systematic, and consists of mainly grammatical knowledge; therefore, cramming teaching has been mainly carried out focusing on memorizing, and the Korean knowledge domain has been perceived as a very boring and uninteresting unit to students. The discussions of "making education content adequate," which were raised in the three occasions of curriculum revision from the fourth to the seventh national educational curriculum has actually helped the educational content in the Korean knowledge domain to be degraded to a lower level. As a result, students' Korean using ability has become lower. The fundamental reason for these phenomena is presumed that the educational content presented by the national curriculum has some problems. This study began from the awareness of those problems. For the analysis of the problems indicated in the educational content, this study investigated a practicality problem in educational content selection in the current Korean knowledge domain, and a problem in the categorization of educational content. In the composition of content system, this study pointed out the problems generated in organizing and arranging learning content. In this study, educational content was selected, and content system was comprised of in the direction of supplementing the problems through problem analyses. To select new educational content, this study presented learners' level, practicality, and the principle of educational content's categorization, so that educational content selection can be made in consideration of all those. For new content system composition, the difficulty and sequence of knowledge, and complexity of language structure were presented as the principle of learning content organization. Also, as a principle of learning content arrangement, learners' level, and connectivity of knowledge was presented to generate hierarchization in consideration of all those. This study is expected to work as the foundation for new Korean knowledge education under the current situation that discussions are underway regarding the revision of the Korean subject curriculum in that this study presents a means for hierarchization through an analysis of the current middle school's Korean knowledge domain problems. out focusing on memorizing, and the Korean knowledge domain has been perceived as a very boring and uninteresting unit to students.
